In acute COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 can infect non-neural cell types that express ACE2 in the olfactory epithelium, specifically stem cells, perivascular cells, sustentacular cells, and Bowman’s gland cells (Figure 1), that leads to cell death and loss of uniformity demonstrated in humanized ACE2 mice [38,48]. The gene discussed is ACE2; the disease is COVID-19.
