CRYM and schizophrenia: Interestingly, in mouse models of schizophrenia, an 8-week treatment with the anti-depressant drug Amitriptyline resulted in massive upregulation of CRYM gene expression (~ 24-fold) [129] indirectly suggesting that levels of pipecolate with potential neuroactive functions may be decreased in the brains of schizophrenic mice and humans.
