The top candidate among enriched immune gene ontologies, in disease, was the CD40 signaling pathway—an immune pathway previously associated with human periodontal disease (Chaturvedi et al. 2015; Su et al. 2020), as well as other related systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and atherosclerosis (Schonbeck et al. 2000; Criswell 2010; Senhaji et al. 2015). Here, CD40 is linked to rheumatoid arthritis.
