In both the human NEC and NEC-on-a-Chip models, there was a decrease in the number of goblet (MUC2; Figure 4, B and J), Paneth (lysozyme; Figure 4, D and L), and enteroendocrine cells (CHGA; Figure 4, F and N) when compared with their respective controls of healthy neonatal intestinal tissue (Figure 4, A, C, E, and G) and the Neonatal-Intestine-on-a-Chip (Figure 4, I, K, M, and O), respectively. The gene discussed is LYZ; the disease is necrotizing enterocolitis.
