VCAM1 and myeloid sarcoma: Although VLA-4 can also bind fibronectin with low affinity, its high affinity ligand VCAM-1 is believed to have a central role in encephalitogenic T cell migration into the CNS, as suggested by the strong blocking effect of anti-α4 integrin and anti-VCAM-1 antibodies on EAE development, corroborated by the therapeutic success of Natalizumab in MS patients (Yednock et al., 1992; Baron et al., 1993; Chan and Aruffo, 1993; Steffen et al., 1994; Miller et al., 2003; Belachew et al., 2011).
