In the study of Rao et al. [81], higher expression of CAST in JNPL3 (mutant tau P301L) mouse models was used to attenuate calpain expression, which has been linked to the development of tauopathy (neurotoxicity caused by tau protein) and neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease. This evidence concerns the gene CAST and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
