Once the COVID-19 virus binds to the ACE-2 receptor, it leads to an increased production of the pro-inflammatory phase, which can lead to serious complications known as “cytokine storms.” (41) In the blood-brain barrier and the meninges that cover the spinal cord, the combination of the virus with ACE-2 weakens the enzyme’s ability to protect nerve tissue, thus making them more vulnerable to damage, leading to encephalitis, or myelitis (42).
