Zinc deficiency also activated the NACHT, LRR, and PYD domains-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and induced interleukin-1β (IL-1β) secretion in an animal model of acute kidney injury [60], although zinc treatment inhibited the activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome by the attenuation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in human peritoneal mesothelial cells [61]. Here, NLRP3 is linked to acute kidney injury.
