VEGFA and age-related macular degeneration: As choriocapillaris flow deficits most likely cause relative hypoxia, the deficits would be associated with elevated levels of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is responsible for MNV development [14], and/or with tissue atrophy; therefore, heterogenous choriocapillaris flow deficits found in AMD fellow eyes may represent precocious AMD changes [13] that likely persist and progress after AMD onset and which possibly affect AMD progression and/or recurrence.
