Since the oral antiviral PaxlovidTM (PF-07321332 co-packaged with ritonavir, an HIV-1 protease inhibitor and CYP3A inhibitor that slows down the breakdown of PF-07321332) was found to significantly reduce the risk of hospitalization or death from COVID-19 in clinical trials [41,42,43], it was granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for the treatment of COVID-19 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 22 December 2021 [44].
