CBS and hyperhomocysteinemia: Figure 6 shows the pathway of metabolism. A study revealed that a decrease in the activity of CBS enzyme leads to a state called hyperhomocysteinemia, abbreviated as HHcy; therefore, the methylation of promoter and the polymorphisms of CBS genes can affect the efficacy of HHcy and using folate the therapy was conducted against low levels of Hcy [78]. Moreover, an increase in homocysteine levels also causes age-related memory loss and cardiovascular disorders. Also in elderly people, homocysteine levels were observed to be higher than in adults [79].
