On one hand, adipocytes can secrete several pro-inflammatory adipokines that promote endothelial dysfunction, leukocyte adhesion, and immune system cell activation (e.g., T-cells, monocytes, neutrophils, and macrophages), including leptin, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), or interleukin 6 (IL-6) [7,8].
