In NAFLD, the phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) decreases fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis by regulating the expression of adipogenesis genes (Acetyl-CoA carboxylase, ACC; Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, PPARG; CCAAT Enhancer Binding Protein Alpha, CEBPA; and 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA Reductase, HMGCR), as well as increasing the expression of fatty acid oxidation and lipolysis genes, such as serine/threonine kinase 1 (CPT1) [30,31,32]. This evidence concerns the gene CEBPA and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
