Among the antioxidant compounds detected in ScBEE, D-(−)-quinic acid and the flavonoid derivative luteolin were previously shown to exert proapoptotic effect on oral cancer cells (squamous cell carcinoma SCC-4) [44,45] and human colorectal cancer cells (HT-29) [46], whereas another flavonoid-rich extract was found to promote apoptosis via the p53-dependent mitochondrial pathway in A549 cells [47]. This evidence concerns the gene TP53 and lip and oral cavity carcinoma.
