Eight of the most promising candidates (C6, C9, CARD6, CD14, CXCL8, LTF, TLR2, TLR4) were associated with mastitis in multiple studies and with different study approaches (expression and association studies) and were differentially expressed during infections with E. coli and S. aureus, respectively (Fig. 2A).
