CHRNA7 and neurodegenerative disease: The α7 nicotinicacetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) waslinked to COVID-19 pathophysiology at the early stage of the pandemic.16 α7nAChR forms homopentameric ligand gatedion channels that mediate synaptic transmission in the central andperipheral nervous systems.17,18 It is involved in cognitivefunction, mental health, and neurodegenerative diseases.19 α7nAChR is also a major player in thecholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway,20,21 which attenuatesproinflammatory cytokine production and minimizes tissue and organinjury during inflammation.
