NLRP3 and infection: Independent of its SREBP2-activating function, the cholesterol sensor SCAP was also observed to connect cholesterol homeostasis to inflammation by shuttling interferon-regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) from ER to the golgi-localized stimulator of interferon genes (STING), thereby facilitating ISG induction upon infection (Chen et al., 2016), and by activation of the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome (Guo et al., 2018).
