IL6 and rheumatoid arthritis: Nicotine reduces the secretion of cytokines secreted by Th1 and Th17 such as IL-12p35, IL-6 and Il-23 and IL-1β and TNF-α in the experimental model of mice.62 Fibroblast-like cells in nicotine-treated RA patients are unable to secrete large amounts of TNFα, which appears to be cholinergic-dependent.52 However, Lindblad et al. showed almost contradictory results wherein spite of a decrease in the amount of IL-6 in the experimental model RA mice’ spleen, there was no visible decrease in the amount of TNF-α and, therefore, no symptoms of the disease.62
