Our finding that the cluster 0/NE markers and YAP1 and WWTR1 expression–based classification scheme was strongly correlated with cell morphology contextualizes earlier reports classifying MCC cell lines as either “classic” or “variant.” Classic MCC has been characterized by higher expression of NE genes and growth in suspension and variant MCC by lower NE gene expression and adherent growth (70–72). The gene discussed is WWTR1; the disease is Merkel cell skin cancer.
