CXCL8 and acute respiratory distress syndrome: Cytokine storms have been reported as a key aspect of COVID-19, and infected patients showed high levels of several key proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1RA, IL-4, IL-8, IFN-ɣ, MCP-1, MIP-1α, and TNF-α, and higher levels of IL-2 and IL-6 was observed in severe infection.25 Mortality of severe COVID-19 cases has been linked to cytokine storms, which frequently result in acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ failure.26–28 Calming a cytokine storm is an important strategy for mitigating severe COVID-19.
