Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is an enzyme secreted by the liver under the stimulation of free fatty acids flux originating from adipose tissue (Cucuianu et al., 2002), and it is recognized as a robust marker to predict the development and prognosis of low-grade systemic inflammatory conditions, such as obesity, in humans (Das, 2012). The gene discussed is BCHE; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
