The MAPT, or Tau proteins, which have been associated with the formation of neurofibrillary tangles [47], and neurofilament chains (NEFL, NEFM, and NFH) [48] are increased in the CSF of ALS patients and correlate with disease severity, thus could be used as biomarkers to track disease [47-53]. The gene discussed is NEFL; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
