As early as 2006, it was reported that neuronal autophagy dysfunction induces neurodegenerative diseases in mice (Komatsu et al., 2006), and recent studies have linked microglial autophagy to NLRP3 inflammasomes (Su et al., 2016; Biasizzo and Kopitar-Jerala, 2020; Badanjak et al., 2021), elucidating the important role of NLRP3 inflammasomes activation triggered by autophagy deficiency in microglial cells in the development of PD. The gene discussed is NLRP3; the disease is neurodegenerative disease.
