These genes are involved in the regulation of cell cycle, cell death and proliferation (Yan et al., 2003; Amir et al., 2017; Kronschnabl et al., 2020; Thomas et al., 2022), with tp53 duplications in elephants previously suggested to be important for countering cancer increase due to large size in these animals (Sulak et al., 2016).
