Several clinical studies have shown that the imbalance between activation and inhibition of MMP-2 plays an important role in the pathogenesis, progression, and metastasis of GTD and that MMP-2 is predominantly expressed in the syncytial trophoblast of gravida (138), as well as a higher positive rate for MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in gestational trophoblastic tumors compared to normal villi (139). This evidence concerns the gene MMP2 and gestational trophoblastic neoplasm.
