CPT1C silencing in different cancer cell lines leads to important alterations in mitochondrial function and morphology: loss of mitochondrial electrochemical gradient [27, 35], reduced mitochondrial respiration (basal oxygen consumption rate and maximal respiration using glucose as a substrate) [27, 35], reduced levels of the mitochondrial-specific lipid cardiolipin [35, 38], swollen mitochondria with loss of internal crista density, and abnormal membrane structures [14, 27] (Fig. 3).
