SLC6A4 and Burkitt lymphoma: Direct uptake of serotonin through the SERT channels also appears to have effects independent of the 5-HT receptors, as serotonin has been shown to induce apoptosis in Burkitt’s lymphoma—a phenomenon which was not inhibited by 5-HT receptor antagonists, but which was abolished by administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which block the SERT channel [69,70].
