HAMP and metabolic disease: A dysregulated interplay between iron and lipids metabolism is a hallmark of several metabolic diseases and is characterized by altered levels of key players in the regulation of iron and lipid metabolism, like hepcidin secreted by the liver, or adipokines released by adipose tissue (e.g., adiponectin, leptin), which can be in turn regulated by iron level and contribute to the control of hepcidin secretion by adipocytes [19,20,21,22].
