In this review, rather than focusing on chronic Th2 cytokine (interleukin 4 [IL-4] and IL-13, in particular) pathway production, we propose that there are signaling pathways in mucosal cells induced by the stress of exposure to chronic allergies, and, thus, altered homeostasis leads to changes in immuno-metabolism and mitochondrial function. This evidence concerns the gene IL13 and allergic disease.
