CNP and myeloid sarcoma: Lead neurotoxicity damages systems involved in MS, since it affects DNA binding proteins that control myelin basic protein, decreases the activity of CNPase required for myelin synthesis, disrupts the blood–brain barrier, induces oxidative stress, binds to enzymes with sulfhydryl groups and renders them non-functional, accumulates in and damages mitochondria, has toxic effects on oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, substitutes for calcium and zinc, and initiates apoptosis90.
