Studies in preeclampsia, a pregnancy-specific syndrome characterized by hypertension and proteinuria, have found that monocytes from preeclamptic women have higher expression of NLRP3 (NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3) inflammasome, caspase-1, and IL-1β compared with normotensive pregnant women, suggesting that inflammasome-mediated inflammation may be implicated in sex-specific hypertensive responses (Matias et al., 2015). Here, NLRP3 is linked to Hypertension.
