It has been recognized in recent years that cancer cells shed from gastrointestinal tumours into the peritoneal cavity would adopt their cell surface CD44 to interact with hyaluronic acid (HA) synthesized by and overlaid the mesothelial cell layer of the cavity [33,34], to catalyse the seeding process over the mesothelial lining. The gene discussed is CD44; the disease is digestive system neoplasm.
