As already mentioned, the major causes of AP are gallstone complications and alcohol abuse, but AP can also occur as the result of a side effect of the standard treatment with asparaginase of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children.88 We were alerted to this by colleagues at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for children in London, who wanted to find out why asparaginase could cause AP. The gene discussed is ASPG; the disease is alcohol abuse.
