A recent paper reported that protein isthmin-1 (ISM1) is secreted by mature adipocytes and triggers a signaling cascade similar to that of insulin, stated as a novel adipokine that acts through an unidentified receptor tyrosine kinase and, at pharmacological doses in mice, ISM1 ameliorates metabolic disturbances associated with T2D, including hyperglycemia and liver steatosis [7, 8]. The gene discussed is ISM1; the disease is fatty liver disease.
