Serum ICAM-1 (soluble) are known marker of inflammation and was reported to be higher in COPD patients and active smokers (Grzelewska-Rzymowska and Pietrzkowicz, 2004; Lopez-Campos et al., 2012) and the effect of cigarette smoke on cultured human bronchial epithelial cells resulted in increased sICAM levels. This evidence concerns the gene ICAM1 and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
