A pseudoviral model of SARS-CoV-2 demonstrated that cepharanthine can inhibit SARS-CoV-2 S protein/angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)-mediated membrane fusion by targeting host calcium ion channels and simultaneously upregulating intracellular cholesterol levels, thereby effectively inhibiting infection by SARS-CoV-2 mutants and different coronaviruses [13].
