IFNG and AIDS: In support of the beneficial role of inflammatory response in HIV-associated cryptococcal meningoencephalitis, it has been shown that addition of IFN-γ to standard treatment significantly enhanced the rate of clearance of C. neoformans infection from the CSF [17,18]; by contrast, adjunctive therapy with immune-suppressing corticosteroids did not reduce the mortality of AIDS patients co-infected with C. neoformans, but was associated with slower fungal clearance in CSF [58].
