Prior to the present study, the effects of melatonin on placental nutrient transporter expression in a compromised pregnancy has not been reported, however, in a sheep study by Edwards, McKnight, Askelson, McKnight, Dunlap and Satterfield [6], SLC38A2 abundance was reduced in placentomes from nutrient restricted IUGR pregnancies, which is contradictory to the current study. The gene discussed is SLC38A2; the disease is fetal growth restriction.
