FLT3 mutation status relates to a prognosis, but it has also been validated as a drug target in AML and hematooncologists can now treat patients with newly approved drugs [2], including those based on small molecule kinase inhibitors, such as sorafenib, midostaurin, gilteritinib, crenolanib, or quizartinib (Figure 1) [1,3]. The gene discussed is FLT3; the disease is acute myeloid leukemia.
