Since this T2D model does not develop atherosclerotic lesions, we turned our attention to the streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T1D in atherosclerosis-prone mice devoid of apolipoprotein E (ApoE KO), a mouse model combining chronic hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia that results in accelerated diabetic atherosclerosis with similarities to human lesions [31]. The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is hyperlipidemia.
