A 2021 paper by Chimenz et al. highlights the potential of other ECM molecules to serve as biomarkers of glomerular disease, as high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and TGFβ-1 were able to predict subclinical fibro-inflammatory changes in the kidney by their early detection in the serum and urine of Alport disease subjects as compared to healthy subjects before the onset of proteinuria. This evidence concerns the gene HMGB1 and glomerular disorder.
