Although deflamin was not found to have a direct effect on cancer cell viability, gelatinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 are known to be critical for the ability of cancer cells to migrate and invade since they act not only on the degradation of the ECM (contributing to the rearrangement of the matrix and release of growth factors) but also on the degradation of cell–cell and cell–matrix adhesion molecules [3]. The gene discussed is MMP9; the disease is cancer.
