Despite the fact that women a smaller left atria and ventricles compared to men, as shown in our study, small magnetic resonance studies have shown that atrial fibrosis in patients with HFpEF was detected in women more than in men [19] and that plasma levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein [20] and fibroblast growth factor [21] are higher in women than in men suggesting an increased risk of AF.
