VEGFA and age-related macular degeneration: The first FDA-approved aptamer drug, Macugen, was developed to recognize pro-angiogenic VEGF165a, which is the predominantly expressed isoform of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), leading to reducing blood vessel growth and permeability/leakage in neovascular AMD (age-related macular degeneration) (Lee et al., 2005; Ng et al., 2006; Amadio et al., 2016).
