Collaboratively, the findings of these in vitro studies have described that hypoxic conditions in hepatocytes trigger the expression of HIF-1α as well as HIF-2α which ultimately control the PAI-1 and VEGF activation, and also control the expression of latent transforming growth factor β1, which can facilitate the liver fibrosis progression (Fig. 3) Many laboratories have also evaluated the association of hepatocytic-HIFs with the progression of liver fibrosis after these findings by in vivo experiments.
