While the function of Methyltransferase Like 7 A (METTL7A) is not well understood, other methyltranferases such as METTL3 and -14 methylate N6-adenosine moieties in RNA and oppose the action of FTO, a N6-adenosine demethylase, which is the only gene that was significantly associated with HF, HFrEF, and HFpEF33; myocardial changes in N6-adenosine methylation of mRNA is associated with progression to HF34.
