While underlining obesity may not have a specific genetic cause, several genes, including Phospholipase Domain-containing 3 (PNPLA3), are associated with NAFLD pathogenesis and affect predisposition to, progression, and severity of NAFLD by facilitating hepatic adipose accumulation which impacts lipid and glucose metabolism, resulting in liver damage [38,39,40]. This evidence concerns the gene PNPLA3 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
