In the pancreas of patients with SPIDDM, which includes a T-cell-mediated insulitis, the following features can be detected: pseudo-atrophic islets, absence of beta cells, and the lack of amylin (i.e., islet amyloid polypeptide) deposition into the islet cells (a pathologic marker of type 2 diabetes). The gene discussed is IAPP; the disease is type 2 diabetes mellitus.
