Lind MV et al. evaluated the effects of folate supplements on glucose metabolism and the risk of type 2 diabetes through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 29 randomized controlled trials involving 22,250 participants, finding when compared with placebo, folate supplementation lowered fasting insulin (WMD: −13.47 pmol/L; 95% CI: −21.41, −5.53 pmol/L; P < 0.001), and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (WMD: −0.57 units; 95% CI: −0.76, −0.37 units; P < 0.0001) suggests that folate supplementation may benefit glycemic homeostasis and hypoglycemia (40). This evidence concerns the gene INS and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
