Targets of UFMylation include nuclear proteins Histone H4 (Qin et al., 2019), MRE11 (Lee et al., 2021), and ACS1 (Yoo et al., 2014) with the latter particularly relevant to the current study given mutations in ACS1 are associated with muscular atrophy (Davignon et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene MRE11 and muscular atrophy.
